The state-run company Cubapetróleo (CUPET) acknowledged on Friday the ongoing scarcity of liquefied gas in Cuba, attributing it to a lack of supplies amid an intensifying energy crisis affecting the entire island. The Fuel Distribution Base Business Unit in Camagüey (UEB DTCC Camagüey) took to its Facebook page to dispel misinformation circulating on social media.
The entity clarified that incorrect reports had been spreading about a supposed delivery of liquefied gas in Santiago de Cuba, followed by Nuevitas. This misinformation stemmed from an announcement originally made on January 30 of this year, which was reshared without noting the date, causing public confusion.
"As of now, no liquefied gas shipments have arrived, and the nationwide deficit continues," emphasized UEB DTCC Camagüey. The unit urged citizens to stay informed through official channels or contact the designated phone numbers: 32273413, 32273414, 32273416, or 32273425, for any inquiries.
Combating Misinformation in Times of Crisis
This incident is not the first of its kind in recent months where CUPET has had to counter false information. Earlier in April, the entity's officials firmly denied rumors suggesting that Cuba would start selling liquefied gas in dollars.
In digital statements, CUPET clarified, "Gas is not being sold in dollars," affirming that official prices remain in Cuban pesos. The company stressed that any changes to the sales structure would be officially announced, not through unverified rumors or posts.
The Worsening Energy Situation
Cuba's energy landscape, characterized by fuel shortages, extended power outages, and basic service crises, has become fertile ground for the spread of inaccurate information, exacerbating public uncertainty.
As the crisis drags on, desperation among Cubans continues to mount. For months, people have faced long lines hoping to purchase gas, often waiting hours or even days without success.
Some residents have shared that "we're resorting to cooking with wood and charcoal again," recalling practices from decades ago due to the lack of essential fuels.
Currently, authorities have not provided concrete dates for new gas shipments nor have they announced alternative measures to mitigate the deficit.
